GOODS & SERVICE TAX COMMISSIONERATES

General Information :

            The Ministry of Finance, Government of India vide its Notification No. 2/2017-Central Tax dated 28th June, 2017  allocated the jurisdiction of eight (8) Goods & Service Tax (GST) Commissionerates under Shillong Zone thereby re-organizing the erstwhile Central Excise & Service Tax Commissionerates of Shillong, Dibrugarh and Guwahati. The above Commissionerates  having its jurisdiction over the 7 (seven) States of North Eastern Region is situated in an industrially backward area and in a corner of the Country having international border with Bangladesh, Myanmar, China, and Bhutan.  It is connected with the mainland through a small strip of land called as “Chicken neck” on account of its width.  Difficult terrain, bad climatic conditions and poor road conditions and lack of proper infrastructure relating to telecommunication and compounded by regular landslides and floods during monsoon keeps all the seven states of this region isolated from the main land as well as from each other.  However, inspite of the above odds, trade and other industrial activities have started picking up after availing of different benefits which were extended to the entrepreneurs by Government of India and also by the local/State Governments.

            Barring the two GST Commissionerates of Guwahati and Dibrugarh, all the other GST Commissionerates have the jurisdiction of their respective State boundaries. The Guwahati GST Commissionerate is spread over the district of Kamrup (both metro and rural), Baksa, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Barpeta, Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar, Nalbari, Goalpara, Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, East & West Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts of Assam Dibrugarh GST Commissionerate extends over the district of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charadeo, Sivasagar,Golaghat, Majuli, Darrang, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Biswanath Chariali, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts of Assam.
